Risks and prevention of sexually transmissible infections among women who have sex with women  / Ruth McNair.

Sexual Health 2 28-06-2005, p. 209-215
bron: Sexual Health 2 28-06-2005, p. 209-215
samenvatting: Health care providers working with women who have sex with women (WSW) have been ill-informed about a range of sexual health issues for these women. Pertinent issues include sexual behaviours that carry risks of sexually transmissible infection (STI), prevention strategies for safer sex and understanding experiences of abuse.

When the heterosexual script goes flexible : Public reactions to female heteroflexibility in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer comic books  / Hélène Frohard-Dourlent.

Sexualities, 15 (2012) 5/6 (sep), p. 718-738
bron: Sexualities jaargang: 15 (2012) 5/6 (sep), p. 718-738
samenvatting: The phenomenon of heteroflexibility, wherein a heterosexual character engages in same-sex intimacy, provides a good example of how modern narratives of sexuality can contain promises of subversion yet also shore up heteronormative schemas. To fully understand how the notion of heteroflexibility functions to broaden and/or restrict our understandings of (female) sexuality, we need to examine how these narratives are taken up by the audience. This article explores this tension by analysing how readers reacted to a heteroflexible storyline featured in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer comic books. By examining how this story was interpreted, rejected and/or embraced by readers, I show that readers who disliked the heteroflexible storyline as well as those who enjoyed it draw on liberal discourses that obscure how heteronormativity operates. This in turn limits heteroflexibility?s potential for disrupting dominant heteronormative discourses.

Borderland Queer : Narrative Approaches in Clinical Work with Latina Women Who Have Sex with Women (WSW)  / Jayleen Galarza.

Journal of LGBT Issues in Counseling, 7 (2013) 3 (jul-sep), p. 274-291
bron: Journal of LGBT Issues in Counseling jaargang: 7 (2013) 3 (jul-sep), p. 274-291
samenvatting: This article seeks to examine the use of narrative approaches as an effective counseling technique for exploring and validating the multi-layering oppressions often encountered by Latina women who have sex with women (WSW). Research exploring the lives and perspectives of Latina WSW remains a newly charted field with possibilities for acquiring information about sexual identity and best practices in working with this community. Their sexual minority status coupled with ethnic/racial gender identities present the added challenges of racism and sexism. To fully meet the specific needs of this population within a mental health setting, counselors must utilize an empowering approach that will draw from the strengths of the Latina WSW community, which will allow for open expressions of experiences and validation of their unique narratives. In this article, the author explores the relevant literature and proposes that narrative techniques can be powerful tools in addressing the racism, homophobia, and sexism that affect the lives of Latina WSW.

Claiming the Right to Health for Women Who Have Sex with Women : Participation and Contestation in the South African National AIDS Council  / Felicity Daly.

LGBTQ Policy Journal, 5 (2014-2015), p. 43-52
bron: LGBTQ Policy Journal jaargang: 5 (2014-2015), p. 43-52
samenvatting: This health policy analysis seeks to understand why and how interventions to improve the sexual health of women who have sex with women (WSW) were initially proposed in the HIV & AIDS and STI Strategic Plan for South Africa for 2007-2011 and how this was reframed in the National Strategic Plan (NSP) on HIV, STIs, and TB for 2012-2016. A conceptual framework is used to summarize determinants of political priority setting for WSW issues in the NSP development process, although a focus on the sexual health of WSW was not maintained in the 2012-2016 NSP due to limits on political participation and growing politico-cultural conservatism.

Alcohol and Tobacco Use Among Women Who Have Sex With Women  / Cort M. Dorn-Medeiros, Cass Dykeman, Timothy Bergquist.

Vistas Online (2016) (article 87), p. 1-14
bron: Vistas Online (2016)(article 87), p. 1-14
samenvatting: Evidence suggests that women who report same-sex partners may be at particular risk for experiencing negative health effects from alcohol and tobacco use. Using data pooled from the results of the 2008-2013 New York City Community Health Survey, this study used multiple regression analyses to examine the predictability of annual household income, age, race, and history of depression on frequency and quantity of alcohol and tobacco use within a total sample of women who have sex with women (WSW). Age and history of depression were statistically significant predictors of alcohol use in WSW, and race was a statistically significant predictor of tobacco use with non-Hispanic White respondents. Results of this study provide greatly needed insight into possible risk factors for alcohol and tobacco use among a significantly understudied population. Results also provide strong encouragement for counselors to inquire about sex and sexuality regardless of client self-identified sexual orientation.

Narrating sexual identities in Kenya : 'Choice,' value, and visibility  / Jason Zingsheim ... [et al.].

Journal of Lesbian Studies, 21 (2017) 2 (apr-may), p. 151-168
bron: Journal of Lesbian Studies jaargang: 21 (2017) 2 (apr-may), p. 151-168
samenvatting: This article examines the discursive construction of female same-sex sexual identities in Nairobi. We identify the discursive forces of 'choice,' devaluation, and invisibility as influential within Kenyan media representations of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex citizens. Using creative focus groups and participant observation, we demonstrate how same-sex attracted women in Nairobi resist and rearticulate these discursive forces to assert their identity and agency as individuals and as a queer community.

Sexual rights in Uganda and the struggle for meaning in community  / Tushabe wa Tushabe.

Journal of Lesbian Studies, 21 (2017) 2 (apr-may), p. 169-185
bron: Journal of Lesbian Studies jaargang: 21 (2017) 2 (apr-may), p. 169-185
samenvatting: Drawing on lessons from the experiences of women who exchange same-sex erotic energies, this article suggests that advocates of same-sex human rights should take into account epistemic erasures colonized people experience when activism and policies regarding sexual freedom ignore various linguistic and community structures that create spaces for diverse ways of knowing and being. Since the late 1990s, the discourse on homosexuality in Uganda has motivated important debates concerning human values of sovereignty, rights, and family, and has expanded freedoms of sexual expression while at the same time conditioning these freedoms to be experienced in colonial ways of self-knowledge. The language that frames these debates continues to locate human rights for Ugandans who exchange same-sex erotic energies outside the locales' family, history, and language?of intelligible episteme for them. To make sense of this claim, I draw 'exchange of same-sex erotic energies' from a saying in Rukiga language spoken by in southwestern Uganda, okugira omukago mukika nikwokunywaana oruganda, to think about family and community in which same-sex erotic energies are lived and experienced. This article attempts to redirect attention from colonial constructions of homosexuality to indigenous and decolonial perspectives in relation to women in Uganda who exchange same-sex erotic energies in their struggle for meaning in community. I argue for pedagogies and epistemologies of place and memory in the struggle for human rights and sexual rights.

States of emergence : Writing African female same-sex sexuality  / Brenna M. Munro.

Journal of Lesbian Studies, 21 (2017) 2 (apr-may), p. 186-203
bron: Journal of Lesbian Studies jaargang: 21 (2017) 2 (apr-may), p. 186-203
samenvatting: Tracing a series of intertextually linked short stories from the 1990s to the present by women writers from Nigeria and its diaspora - Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Unoma Azuah, Chinelo Okparanta, and Lola Shoneyin - I suggest that although the figure of the African lesbian appears 'new' in the context of heightened contemporary attention to the issue of homosexuality, this figure has a literary history. Ghanaian Ama Ata Aidoo's novel Our Sister Killjoy: Or, Reflections From A Black-Eyed Squint (1977) inaugurates this formation, in which the imagining of female same-sex desire is entangled with articulating the experience of migration under the shadow of imperial histories. In these short stories, the emphasis on the difficulties of love in puritanical times and transnational places produces the figure of the African lesbian as a symbol of appealingly human vulnerability, resilience, and complexity.

Sexuality and the Unnatural in Colonial Latin America  /

ed. by Zeb Tortorici.Oakland, CA: University of California Press, 2017 - xiv, 239 p.: ill.

samenvatting: Sexuality and the Unnatural in Colonial Latin America brings together a broad community of scholars to explore the history of illicit and alternative sexualities in Latin America's colonial and early national periods. Together the essays examine how "the unnatural" came to inscribe certain sexual acts and desires as criminal and sinful, including acts officially deemed to be "against nature" - sodomy, bestiality, and masturbation - along with others that approximated the unnatural - hermaphroditism, incest, sex with the devil, solicitation in the confessional, erotic religious visions, and the desecration of holy images. In doing so, this anthology makes important and necessary contributions to the historiography of gender and sexuality. Amid the growing politicized interest in broader LGBTQ movements in Latin America, the essays also show how these legal codes endured to make their way into post - independence Latin America.
